SMART HOLLYWOOD w/ Jonathan Fuhrman

And the early word from “Variety” and “Hollywood Reporter” is that the film is a must-see.  (Click the link above for Variety’s review).  Ok, color me a bit surprised on this one.  This film has been getting buzzed about seemingly forever (which is fitting as it has literally been YEARS in the making), but ever since footage started popping up from Comic-Con this past summer I have been feeling a little underwhelmed.

Maybe its because the animated world Cameron creates in “Avatar” just seemed a little too cartoony, and those big blue Avatar figures weren’t connecting with me.  The more I saw of the film, the more I worried that it might not totally work - especially the love story aspect between two big blue aliens with nice hair.  Let’s just say I wasn’t getting quite the same love story for the ages vibe that Kate & Leo brought to “Titanic”.

Apparently I should have had much more faith in Cameron, and really with his track record, how could I have doubted him for a second.  Its much easier to second-guess the marketing people and the ad campaign they’ve created.  But Cameron has made clear from day one that he was making this film as a must-see 3D event, and there is no way a 30 second tv spot could begin to do justice to his vision.

So i’m happy to report that I’m now getting very psyched to see “Avatar” and am planning to see it in IMAX 3D opening weekend.  I’ll report back with my take after I see it, but really, any film that reunites Cameron with Sigourney Weaver (who kicked so much butt as Ripley in Cameron’s “Aliens”) deserves to be on my must-see list sight unseen.
