At tonight’s 19th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards, the ingenious Patton Oswalt offered a little (tongue firmly in cheek) help to the marketing team behind his current dark indie film “Big Fan”, which is about an obsessed NY Giants football fan who has a rather disturbing encounter with one of his idols.
Oswalt, who was nominated tonight for “Breakthrough Actor” for his performance in the film, had this to say on why you should go seek out his nominated film:
“Hey, have you not been bummed out in a while, watching a pudgy loser living with his parents, getting beaten into a coma? Well good news, ‘Big Fan’ is still in theaters. So why go look at blue aliens that James Cameron stole from someone’s screensaver. Or look at teen vampires surrounded by 12 year old girls. Wouldn’t you rather see a guy who looks like an aging lesbian get beaten up by a gigantic football player, and then go insane and do a creepy semi-violent revenge? Yes, you would. ’Big Fan” is the film for you.”
There you have it folks. If that doesn’t make you want to see the film, I’m not sure what will. And certainly you will want to see Patton Oswalt perform stand-up next time he comes to your town! The man is flat-out hilarious. If Oswalt’s pitch didn’t convince you to seek out this film, you should know that tonight at the Gotham Awards, “Big Fan” took home the Breakthrough Director award for the film’s writer/director, Robert Siegel (who wrote last year’s award favorite “The Wrestler”).
